Job Stories From Dupage County, IL
Bathroom remodel in Downers Grove, Illinois

This client came to us looking to have his garage remodeled, while that is no longer a service we are offering Bob Ligmanowski went to go look at the space for him as he came onto Norway Built as a referral. Into the meeting, Bob politely explained that this wasn't a service we offered but provided lots of ideas of what he would be able to do with the space, and referred him to a reputable garage remodeler, Blue Sky Builders. Then, they began talking about things that Bob is currently working on in the industry, which brought them to the first floor bathroom in one of the first homes built in Downers Grove, Illinois. In need of a facelift, they started to bounce around ideas as to what they could do with the space.

The client decided to replace the existing tub, with a walk-in calcutta marble shower. A huge concern for this client was making the changes fit in with the character of the home. They replaced an old window with custom trim and replacement glass that respected the aesthetic of the older home. They were able to mimick new woodwork in the bathroom that matched the existing home. They installed a old fashion charm white tile with tones of grey and black.

After the project the client reports back that their grandchildren, which previously were challenge to get into the shower, and now are timed to get out of the shower sooner. They were able to make better use of the space and naturally light up the bath.

Bathroom remodel in Clarendon Hills, Illinois

This client came about one day when she and her husband walked into the office looking for someone who could remodel a bathroom to accommodate changing circumstances within the family. Bob went to look at their space and it was determined that it would be more cost effective for the client to have a handy man come and out to complete the work they wanted completed. He referred them to one someone in his trusted network that he had worked with before, however the client politely declined and asked him to reconsider.

As he did, the crew began to work and demo the existing bath removing the tile, hardwood floor, tub, vanity, and toilet. They also took down a partial wall to reframe so that they could add a big medicine cabinet that recessed into the wall. The crew poured a new shower base, and tiled the surrounding base, walls, and ceiling. They added grab bars in the shower, along with a shower niche in the wall for holding soap bottles and other shower essentials. They added a vent and extra electrical fixtures into the ceiling for better lighting. The new remodel also allowed for much needed storage space, so they installed a tall cabinet and sink base cabinet for all of their bathroom essentials. Now the previously enclosed bathroom, is much more open and accessible for the couple with ample storage space.

Sunroom Repair in Oak Brook, Illinois

Norway Built was recommended by the gatehouse in a subdivision we had done work in previously. It was for a homeowner that had a glass room attached to their home. The client was looking for the glass roof leak to be fixed. She was considering removing the entire room and installing a brand new one. Upon inspection and asking a series of preliminary questions, such as how often it leaks, and where and what it does when it leaks. The room was in immaculate condition, so Bob and the team thought about a couple possible solutions that would be best for the homeowner. It came up that they could add heat cables and a gutter system at the ends. This simple solution solved the problem and saved the client tens of thousand of dollars in unneccesary work.

Restoration Wall System in Glen Ellyn, Illinois

This client repeatedly mentioned water coming in the basement and it smelling like mold and mildew. After cutting some access points in basement walls, and finding nothing, the only thing other option the crew could figure was ground pressure and thought they might need to install a drain tile system. To insure that it was not an interior pipe leaking from the upstairs, the crew opened up a section of the ceiling and found a rusted electrical pipe. The pipe was traced to the outside and upon some investigation they discovered that someone had hooked up an outside light to the incorrect electrical pipe. Everytime it rained, it would run down to the electrical pipe to a box that lead to a leak on the floor. We then, removed all the damaged drywall, insulation, and piping out of the wall. The crew installed a restoration wall system and hooked up the exterior electrical outlet correctly.

Bathroom Leak in Glen Ellyn, Illinois

This client complained of water problems in the walk of the pantry sporadically, and asked if we could help them figure out what the issue was. The crew pulled down the can light and snaked a scope through to see if there was any water damage or leaking. They fished the scope about 20 feet away, and discovered it went to the children's bathroom upstairs. Then, a series of water tests were performed in the bathroom and they still couldn't find anything until Bob found the wall plate behind the shower diverter was not caulked to the wall. This meant that when the water tested the plate, water would leak into the pantry. One of the kids were tall enough to splash the plate when showering and this would have the water run behind the plate and get behind the wall. It would then, follow the pipes and run out through the pantry light. The problem was simply alleviated by caulking the plate. The time and effort they put into determining this small but mighty problem saved the client from tearing out the entire hall bathroom after just have completed their master bathroom a few weeks prior.

Flooded Basement in Downers Grove, Illinois.

This particular client had finished his basement with the Total Basement Finishing Wall Systems about 6 months ago because his basement kept flooding and ruining his furniture, trim, carpet, and doors. They had a water proofing company come in to cut the walls up and install a drain tile system. They left him high and dry (pun intended), installed the system and left the job site with exposed walls. Through an architect friend of Bob's, this client was told to call our company.

Bob went out to look at his problem and came up with the perfect solution – the TBF wall restoration, thermal dry flooring, and Sanidry. After talking with the client, he decided that he only wanted to do the fiberglass installation and drywall back and to leave the concrete floor. Bob politely explained that after being in business for over 30 years, he didn't feel comfortable putting inferior products into his client's home knowing that they will cause more harm than good. After explaining further on how our products work, the owner agreed to go with Bob's recommendation. Prior to the job they had completed, they never used that space because of the dampness and the foul smell. With the new Sanidry and other products, they were now using the basement on a daily basis.

They were very happy clients until six months later, they left their garden hose outside during the winter season and with the sub zero temperatures, the hose froze. The climate started to warm up and inevitably the hose burst, cracked and the water ran freely for a couple of days unnoticed. They called Norway Built to see if there was anything we could think of as to why their basement would flood. With the snow melt off, rain, and the hose running for two days, Bob found that the water built up on the foundation had found a way in from old well piping that was capped off but leaking around the two pipes. The crew vacuumed and mopping up the water, and the next day when they were able to get back in, they cut out the pipes, patched the wall with hydraulic cement and patched the holes. They used Epoxy over the patches and it solved the problem. With all that, I asked the home owner if they were happy with their decision to put in TBF basement products.  They both hugged me and told me it was the best thing they ever did for their house and wallets!

Water Leak in Wheaton, Illinois.

After completing, a beautiful kitchen for a neighbor, a very good client of ours, referred us to complete their neighbors kitchen. After being awarded the contract, we completed kitchen and they loved it. We looked at the master bathroom for a second project. Her wishes were to wait for the following year to do the bathroom but work on the plan now.  While working on the kitchen and putting protection up in the family room, I noticed a water spot on the ceiling in the family room. I asked the homeowners if they knew what that was from. She said it was an on going problem for the last couple of years, and have been unable to figure it out, but thought it was okay now. She asked if we could remove the piece of drywall and patch while we were putting the drywall in the kitchen. While we were in the ceiling, we also performed a series of water tests in the master and the hall bathroom to see if we could locate the culprit.

Three months after finishing the kitchen, the homeowner contacted us and asked us to fix the ceiling again for a Christmas party they were having so it would not look bad. She said that the leak came back and it actually seemed to be a little worse this time. Brandon asked a series of questions; who is using the baths, when they are using them, and what had she noticed was different or being used more? She said the whirlpool tub had been used more frequently because her husband hurt his back and had been using the jets on the whirlpool. She thought it might be the drain but after testing everything, we found no leaks. We asked where the access was for the pump to the whirlpool and behind all her clothes and shoe racks, they found the access panel.

After opening it up and running the jets with a full tub of water, we found that the fittings were lose on the pump. After tightening the fittings, and resecuring the pump, the problem was solved and ceiling patched.  The customer was planning on tearing out the shower and rebuilding it or taking out the tub to get a new one temporarily installed until they were ready to move forward renovationing the entire bathroom. They were grateful to be able to wait and complete the project the right way when spring time comes!

Queen Anne Home Remodel in Hinsdale, Illinois.

These clients spent a long time searching for a home with a lot of character, that was walking distance from the quaint little downtown area. The current owners of the home are only the second owners, as this property had been in the family for three generations! The clients came to Norway Built after purchasing this beautiful Queen Anne home in Hinsdale, knowing they were going to need some hefty updates. The crews favorite part about this remodel was adding kitchen cabinets to the space they used as a kitchen because this home had never had cabinets in it before. The kitchen at the time had consists of a simple water basin sink and some counter space. They had to add a stairway to get to the second floor, and a hallway so that people could get through the second story more freely without having to enter rooms to get to other rooms. They enclosed a porch off the back of the home to create a great room for the family to entertain, and off that space they created a little deck so that they could enjoy their beautiful spacious backyard. All the renovations on the home were done so tastefully holidng up the upmost importance to keep the character and intregity that the original building held.
